Durwin Ross Wilcoxon passed away Tuesday, March 30, 1989, at the Valley Lutheran hospital in Mesa, Arizona at the age of 69. Services for Saturday, April 30, 1989, at the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer was Pastor Paul Kaldahl officiating. Music was provided by organist Carolyn Blaue, and soloist Peggy Schimmer. Casket bearers were Chad Wilcoxon, Justin Lee, Laramie Full, Larry Jorgensen, Cary Klatt and Bruce Mertens. Honorary casket Bearers were Ronald Allanson, Floyd Breidinger, George Selzer, John Rohlk, John Anderson and Bob Clark. Interment was at the Prairie View Cemetery in Paullina. Durwin Ross Wilcoxon, the son of Ross and Anna Bustad Wilcoxon, was born April 30, 1929 in Slayton, Minnesota. He was baptized June 9, 1929 at the Methodist Church in Slayton. He received his early education and graduated from the Slayton high school. There was confirmed into the Lutheran faith on June 1, 1954 at St. John's Lutheran in Germantown, Iowa. Following his schooling, Durwin served in the Korean conflict from April 1951 to March 1953 with the U.S. Army and receive the Korean War Medal. On April 5, 1953, he was married to Betty Jean Mertens at the Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina. Following their marriage, Durwin farmed near Paullina and also ran his own feed grinding business. They move to the communities of Sioux City and then Cherokee where he owned and operated Wilcoxon Transfer. In 1974 the move to the Spencer where he was employed at Eaton's Corporation as an inspector until his retirement in 1991. Prior to his retirement Durwin and Betty built a home on the canal of Lake Okoboji, where they lived in the summers and Apache Junction, Arizona where they lived in the winters.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; one son, two daughters and their husbands, four grandchildren: one sister, Eleanor Clauson and her husband Bob, of Arizona; two brothers and their wives Keith and Betty of Minnesota and Clair and Fauntie of Florida; plus many other relatives and friends. He is preceded death by his parents and one granddaughter, Heidi Full.
